brain chip (ASX:BRN) has signed a commercial license agreement with Frontgrade Gaisler, a provider of radiation-hardened microprocessors.

The deal will incorporate BrainChip’s Akida AI intellectual property into Frontgrade Gaisler’s fault-tolerant microprocessors designed for use in space missions. This follows a previous collaboration announced in May 2024 in which BrainChip’s Akida technology was evaluated for potential space applications.

This partnership enables the deployment of AI in space, an area that requires highly reliable, low-power computing in extreme environments.

Reason why Akita was chosen

Akida neuromorphic AI systems process data in real-time while achieving low power consumption, minimal mass, and a small physical footprint, which are key characteristics for space applications. Traditional systems such as GPUs and FPGAs struggle to meet space-grade constraints on mass, volume, and power. The European Space Agency (ESA), which has been at the forefront of efforts to deploy neuromorphic computing into space, played a key role in assessing the potential of this system.

commercial terms

Under this agreement, BrainChip will receive:

• 10% royalty on the net selling price of the first licensed product sold by Frontgrade Gaisler.
• €150,000 for an initial integration project with Frontgrade Gaisler, part of ESA’s Discovery Open Space Innovation Platform.

Frontgrade has the option to license additional Akida 1.0 IP for a second product for a fee of EUR 150,000 or a royalty of 15% of the net selling price of the second product.

BrainChip CEO Sean Hehir commented, “We are excited to expand our trusted relationship with Frontgrade as they push the boundaries of space computing.”

The stock closed yesterday at $0.25, an increase of 4.17%.
